INFORMATION ON RACING

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST N.S.W. POSTAL STAFF (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. May 30. The Postmaster-General (Mr H. L. Anthony) said to-dav that investigations into allegations that a gang inside and outside the Post Office was engaged in large-scale telephone tapping to obtain racing information, had revealed serious irregularities by a number of employees in Post Office procedure. Disciplinary action would be taken and. in some cases, dismissals were likely. The investigators had informed the Minister, however, that the allegation that the gang was obtaining starting price betting information for sale by wire-tapping, was unfounded. Detectives had reported to the PostmasterGeneral that it would be almost impossible for postal employees to tap wires and take down the long starting price betting details as they were under the constant surveillance of supervisors. The only possible information they could get in these circumstances would be confidential racing intelligence passing between trainers, owners, and jockeys. Detectives believed that information of this kind had been obtained.
