N.Z. TRADE WITH CANADA

VIEWS OF MR R. W. MAYHEW (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 30. Prospects of increased reciprocal trade between New Zealand and Canada were mentioned by Mr R. W. Mayhew, the Canadian Minister of Fisheries and Marine, before he left for Canada by air this afternoon. The Minister has just completed a brief visit of farms and industries in New Zealand. With Mr J. R. Jayawardene, Minister of Finance of Ceylon, he was the guest of the New Zealand Government. “The country as we found it is not only as green as grass, but greener, ana I think there is every opportunity for advancement,” Mr Mayhew said. “We have only five or six months during which our stock can graze, but you have 10 to 12 months. I think your country has great possibilities. You can produce cheaper goods than us and we can produce cheaper 'goods than you can. For instance, you should be able to produce butter much cheaper than we can.” He said that Canada was anxious to increase trade in commodities which New Zealand could produce cheaply and this would increase the country’s dollar earnings. Asked whether there was a market for New Zealand butter and mutton in Canada at present, Mr Mayhew said there was a surplus of butter, but a shortage of mutton. “We could do with some New Zealand mutton right now,” he added. The Minister said New Zealand had wonderful tourist attractions and should attract many visitors.
