AUSTRALIAN CLAIMS FOR ALLOWANCES SPECIAL COMMITTEE TO MAKE REPORT (Ree. 8 p.m.) CANBERRA, May 30. The Prime Minister of Australia (Mr Menzies) announced that a committee of three former servicemen has been appointed by the Government to investigate the claims of former prisoners of war to a special subsistence allowance for the time they were prisoners of the Germans or the Japanese. The members of the new committee are Mr Justice Owen, LieutenantGeneral S. G. Savige, and Dr. W. E. Fisher, president of the council of the Bth Division and Service Assotiates. The committee will consider representations from the organisations concerned and report whether it recommends the payment of a special allowance. This was one of Mr Menzies’s election promises.
