BLACKBALL MINES IDLE
200 MEN ALREADY OUT OF WORK From Our Own Reporter
GREYMOUTH, May 29. Most of the miners in the Blackball area are already idle because of the damage to the Blackball bridge. The railway line- over this bridge carried all the coal produced to Greymouth and the east coast. The township has alternative access on the west bank of the Grey river, but there appears to be no prospect of the coal industry resuming full operations until the bridge is restored. This is expected to take at least three months.
Qf the 300 miners in the district, about 200 are already unemployed. The Roa State mine, which employs 95 men, worked to-day and may be able to continue operations for the remainder of the week before its large storage capacity is taxed.
In May, 1926, when the bridge suffered even worse damage, many of the unemployed miners were diverted to emergency work on the bridge, and this may be done again. A special meeting of the Blackball Miners’ Union was held this afternoon to discuss the position.
