BRITISH COMMENT ON N.Z.’S POSITION
(Rec. 8.30 D.m.) LONDON, May 29. “While the petrol tanks of Br’tish cars are now full, those of New Zealand motorists are not.” says the “Daily Express.” in a leading article. “The New Zealanders, in petrol as in other things, put their own pleasures second and what are thought the needs of the Empire first; but New Zealand was not sent ‘even a postcard’ when Britain decided to deration petrol. “The first intimation that the New Zealand Prime Minister (Mr Holland) had of the British decision was his morning newspaper. This off-hand treatment would be bad enough if it were directed to an unimportant dependency. It becomes intolerable when directed to a people who in our time of danger sustained this country with everything they had, including their lives.” Wa’cott Beats German Boxer.—Jersey Joe Walcott, the American negro heavy-weight, beat the German champion Heinten Hoff, on points over 10 rounds at Mannheim to-day in the first international fight held in Germany since the Second World War.— Berlin, May 28,
