British Motorists On Holiday HEAVY TRAFFIC FROM LONDON (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON. Mav 28. More than 1.500,000 motor-cars took the road to-day in the biggest Whit Sunday rush to the coast and country since 1939. There was plenty of petrol for all. after the ending of rationing. Tankers rumbled out of depots with nearly 1.000.000 gallons in preparation for the ru-=h. Automobile Association patrols had a busy day repairing minor defects. One gave first aid to a 1902 De Dion wh’ch was being driven to a rally at Oxford. Traffic out of London was a- ‘Ha rate of 20.000 cars an hour by midday. The nationalised rail and road services were affected by the end of petrol rationing. The railways reported considerably smaller crowds than year. People were able to board holiday trains without queueing, for the first time in years. Motor coach authorities said that the traffic was not up to expectations. On Whit Sunday in 1939. five months before petrol was rationed. 27.000 cars an hour were reported to be leaving London.
