CONSTITUTION FOR N.Z.

SECOND N.Z.E.F. OPPOSES PROPOSAL (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 29. A request not to proceed with its proposal to introduce a written constitution for New Zealand is being made to the Government by the Dominion executive of the Second N.Z.E.F. Association. The executive”s decision was made unanimously after it was pointed out that written constitutions were inevitable in countries like Australia, where two Governments—Federal and State —co-existed, but that there would be no compensating advantages if the step were taken in New Zealand. Speakers referred to the United Kingdom. whose constitution was regarded as ideal for democracies, but was not found in any document. The resolution declares that a constitution for New Zealand is “unnecessary; inflexible, and tending to shackle the sovereignty of Parliament.”
