STEEL AND COAL MERGER

BRITAIN’S REPLY TO FRENCH PLAN

“ DISTINCT DIFFERENCE IN VIEW POINT” (Rec. 9 p.m.) PARIS. May 27. Britain s reply to France’s invitation to join negotiations for setting un a European coal and steel pool was received at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to-night. A French Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the reply left the same impression as had the British Foreign Secretary (Mr Ernest Bevin) in his earlier offer to Mr Schuman. There was still a distinct difference between the views of London and Paris. The spokesman said that the French Government was not asking other governments to bind themselves in advance to any agreement, but felt that those who came to the conference table must agree in advance to the principle of a common high authority' which, in coal and steel production, would have a power of decision overriding that of the governments participating in the pool.

Commons Adjourns— The House of Commons adjourned yesterday for the Whitsun holiday. It will resume on June 13.—London, May 27.
