BAGUIO CONFERENCE

Seven Nations Agree To Form Committees

(Rec. 8 p.m.) MANILA, May 27. The seven-nation Baguio conference on South-east Asia decided at a closed session to form two subcommittees—one economic, the other social and cultural. This was revealed last night by the president. General Carlos Romulo, who said that all seven nations would be represented on each committee by different delegates, except Siam, whose lone delegate would participate in both. General Romulo said that the session of the conference, which aims at the promotion of peace, social progress, and a better standard of life in South-east Asia, had been “most constructive." He reiterated his optimism about the ultimate outcome of the conference, and

said that there was a large area of agreement among the delegates, and unanimity on the need for calling a conference at this time. He said that all admitted there was a need for closer collaboration among the free nations in the region.

The conference was “not aiming at any secret agreement or organising against anything.” He added that, despite the closed session. everything adopted by the conference would be published and nothing would be kept secret. General Romulo expressed the hope that a permanent organisation might result from the conference.

The conference, which opened yesterday. is attended by delegates worn Australia, Ceylon, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Siam, and the Philippines.
