AGRICULTURE IN MALAYA

PROGRESS HAMPERED BY SUPERSTITION PLANS FOR EDUCATING YOUNGER GENERATION “Young farmers’ clubs and other youth organisations have almost ceased to exist in Malaya, because every young man who is fit to fight fias been mobilised for the battle against Communist bandits.” said Mr Mahamed Rashid, addressing the annual meeting of the Canterbury Council of Young Farmers’ Clubs yesterday. A UNESCO scholarship has enabled Mr Rashid to visit New Zealand to study agriculture and farmers’ organisations. Endeavours had been made to introduce progressive agricultural methods into Malaya, but very little headway had been made because of widespread illiteracy and superstition, said Mr Rashid. It had been found necessary to ignore older farmers and concentrate on the younger generation.

“I have learned a great deal here in New Zealand that will be of great value to us in Malaya and Burma,” said Mr Rashid, “and as soon as the time is opportune we will take full advantage of what I have learned. I realise the important part that young farmers’ clubs can play, and when peace comes to Malaya we will foster their formation.”
