EMPIRE SERVICE NEXT SUNDAY

BISHOP OF GOULBURN TO PREACH

The Empire commemoration service, in honour of all men and women who have contributed to the growth and maintenance of the British Commonwealth and Empire, will be held in the Christchurch Cathedral next Sunday, when the preacher will be the Rt. Rev. E. H. Bugmann, Bishop of Goulburn. The Archdeacon of Manchester, the Ven. A. S’. Bean, with Christchurch clergy of other denominations, will also take part in the service. The Empire commemoration service movement hopes that next Sunday clergy of all denominations will make some reference in ther churches to the idea behind the commemoration service.

The objects of the movement are: “To have a day of public religious remembrance through New Zealand on which with thanks we shall recall to mind all those men and women who through the centuries have contributed to the growth and maintenance of the British Empire, such as navigators, discoverers, statesmen, pioneers, and faithful servants of the Christian Church, reformers, philanthropists, philosophers, scholars, scientists, leaders in industry, and those who, on land, sea, and in the air, have fought for freedom and justice; and to unite in thanksgiving and intercession all people who prize our heritage in the Empire and are determined that the Empire shall continue to be throughout the world a witness for God and a bulwark of human freedom and righteousness.” The movement is sponsored by patriotic societies, the Returned Services’ Association, the South African War Veterans’ Association, the Red Cross, and many other bodies.
