NEW BATHING UNITS

INSTALLATION IN HOSPITAL

Two mechanical bathing units—one for the female chronic patients and one for the males—will be bought by the North Canterbury Hospital Board for installation in the Burwood Hospital. This was decided by the board yesterday.

It was thought bv the matron and sisters at Burwood that patients would have more confidence in the mechanical devices than they would in the young nurses at the hospital, said Mr P. Stanley Foster, chairman of the hospital committee. Patients were safer with the mechanical aids, said Mr J. J. Brownlee. At Burwood the staff consisted girls of 17 or 18 years of age, and they did not have the necessary physical strength to lift elderly, heavy patients in and out of baths. The excessive manual work was damaging to the girls and to the hospital’s reputation. There had been argument about the cost of the new units—about £550 each in Australia—but if the wastage of nursing aids at Burwood could be cut by 50 per cent, the cost of the baths would be saved in six months.

If there was any difficulty about finance the units could be paid for out of trust funds, said the chairman (Mr V. C. Lawn).
