DETAILS PUBLISHED IN GAZETTE

INCREASES SHOWN IN MOST ITEMS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 23. Most of the main items of Government receipts showed seme increase in the last year over the totals for the preceding year, but departmental expenditure was also higher. The following information is contained in a Gazette published to-night fall the tabulated figures being given in thousands of pounds):

The Defence Fund now stands at £2.932.000. an increase of £1,300.000 on the total at the end of the previous financial year. Claims paid from the Earthquake and War Damage Fund totalled £2198. compared with £15,000 in the preceding 12 months. The balance in the fund is now £6,835.000, compared with £6.110.000 at March 31. 1949. The purchase of shares in British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines cost £242.000. and a further call on shares in the British Petroleum Company. Limited, cost £ 190.000. There is an item of £275.000 under the heading of payment to the National Airways Corporation. The purchase of shares in Dominion Salt. Ltd., cost £50,000. 1 Medical, hospital, and pharmaceutical benefits cost £8.461.000. compared with £7.875,000 in the previous year. Age benefits totalled £15,134,000, compared with £13.791.000. and family benefits £14,851.000, compared with ■ £14.242.000. The total monetary benefit paid ! under the Social Security Act totalI led £36.827,000. compared with £34,140.000 in the previous year.
