INHERITANCE OF BARONETCY

CLAIM ADVANCED FOR CHESHIRE ManLondon, May 22. When Mrs May Wolseley, a 63-year-old widow of Wallasey. Cheshire, recently wrote to the editor of "Deb- i rett’s Reel age” making inquiries about her family tree, she did not expect her inquiry to lead to proof that her 35-year-old son, Mr Carnet Wolseley. was the twelfth baronet of Mount Wolseley, Eire, and a relative of FieldMarshal Viscount Wokeley, who led the expedition to ,-elieve General Gordon in Khartoum. Mr Wolseley manages a small shoerepairing shop in Massey road, Wallasey. The search for an heir to the Wol- j seley title began last February, when I the eleventh baronet, the Rev. Sir [ William Augustus Wolseley, of Morpeth, Northumberland, died without issue. There were several claimants, i including one cousin in the United States. Mrs May Wolseley’s letter revealed that a branch of the family which was believed to have died out last century. was still in existence, and that her son was. in all probability, the missing heir. The editor of “Debrett’s Peerage,” Mr Cyril Hankinson, said he had no doubt that Mr Garnet Wolseley was the twelfth baronet, and that steps would be taken to confirm him in the title.

Mr Wokeley. who is at present earning £5 10s a week, and living in a 15s-a-week flat with his mother and sister, said he would continue shoe repairing. “It is a bit of a thrill.’’ he said, “but I want to learn more about it.” [According to “Burke’s Peerage.” the baronetcy of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, in the Irish Baronetcy, was created in 1744. Viscount Wolseley, a member of an untitled branch of the family, was born in 1833.- and died in 1913. He was created a baron in 1882. and a viscount in 1885. The barony became extinct on his death, but the viscountcy passed by special remainder to his only daughter, on whose death it also became extinct.]
