SPLIT IN UNION MOVEMENT

WALLSEND MINERS HEAR ADDRESSES (New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH. May 23. The first of three meetings on the split in the Federation of Labour to be held by West Coast miners’ unions took place this afternoon at Wallsend. The others will be held to-morrow afternoon at Dobson and on Thursday morning at Runanga. After the meetings, the miners will vote, it is reported, on whether their organisations should remain in the Federation of Labour or affiliate with the Trade Union Congress. The decisions of these unions will involve the allegiance of more than 1000 men. Wallsend miners observed a fivehour shift to-day. The men stopped work at one o'clock, and were addressed by the national secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Union <Mr T. Hill) and by the secretary of the Federation of Labour (Mr K. McL. Baxter). Dobson State miners will work a short shift to-morrow to allow the case for the two organiastions to be placed before them in the afternoon, but the Runanga union will not work at all on Thursday. As a result the Strongman and Liverpool State mines will be idle.
