SCHOOLING AT RICCARTON

RACING

NOVICE HURDLERS SHOW PROMISE

Schooling tasks by the novice hurdlers, Knkella and Watchword, were interesting features of training at Riccarton yesterday. Kifjtella (E. A. Winsloe) showed a lot of dash in his run over three hurdles. He jumped fast and cleanly, and he appears likelj' to be a success as a hurdler. Watchword went well over two hurdles. The “Battle Song mare has been an apt PupiLL She showed a lot of ability in ha-k’-middlc distance races but she was wayi® rd on the tracks. Spsmgwater (A. J. Williams) and Deep Harmony (K. J. Thomson) were partnered/ in a good display over four hurdfes. Coxswain also shaped encouragingly. Death of Atomic The six-year-old Contact gelding. Atomic, died at Matamata on Monday. In four seasons’ racing he won six races and was placed 18 times for £43uB in stakes. Moonee Valley Winner Regal Chief, a four-year-old son of the Mount Barker sire Royal Chief, won the Aberfeldie Handicap, one mile and five furlongs, at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Regal Chief is the second produce of the Solicitor General mare, Legis, and is a half-brother to the Wingatui-trained Faustina. Sylvan Changes Hands

The foui-year-old Royal Chief mare Sylvan, which has won three races for her breeder. Mr H. W. S. Faulks, tins seasen, has been purchased by Mr D. McFarlane. She will be trained for her future racing at Wingatui by A. E. Didham. Sylvan is the last produce of the Wooder.d marc. Fairwood, which died before foaling in 1946. Fairwood was from the Bonito rm mare Fairform, dam of the good winners Tauramai, Passaform, and PiatDinnyhaver Strikes Form Dinnyhazer scored his first win in 13 starts this season when he finished strongly wide out to win the Kingsdown Hack Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday. .he Pioneer gelding followed the paccmaxers, Lady Guillotine and Night Ruler, to the straight, but he ran wide on the turn, and appeared to lose his winning chance. Galloping boldly, however, he held on to beat the fast-finishing Salmarie by a neck. Had he taken a shelter course in the run home his winning margin would have been a wider one. Dinnyhazer is trained at Mcsgiel by his owner. Mr A. J. Brown. Salmarie. a Salmagundi mare trained at Riccarton by W. Barr for Mr A. Kyle, just failed u. a majoi She was the 14-15 favourite, and her place dividend was £23 9s 6d. Her only previous glimpse cf form was her third in a weak hack field at Greymouth in February. Surprise at Randwick Arrowsmith, an aged horse with progeny running in the paddocks of his owners, scored his second surprise win in the mile Welter Handicap at Rand wick on Saturday. After being laid at ICO-1. Arrowsmith started at 66-1, and finished strongly down the outside of the track to win by half a length from Conductor. On April 7, 1347. Arrowsmith, after starting at 100-1, won the A.J.C. La Perouse Handicap, run over the same cc u rse. Some months later he finished second to Gay Wallah in the Narrabri -Cup. and the discovery that he had been doped for that race led to his being disqualified, together with his trainer (K. Kneller) for life. Mr and Mrs Geoffrey Scott, the owners, who had not been at the meeting, successfully appealed to the A.J.C. committee against Arrowsmith's disqualification. Bred at Timaru 1 addy Joe. which won the foxton Cup narrowly but well on Saturday, was bred at the Holme Station stud, Timaru. and was sold as a yearling for 110 guineas. In the few races he had over middle distances when competing in the hack class. Paddy Joe shewed plenty of promise. In his last start in 1 <s class he was very unlucky to be beaten into third piace by Mt. Curl and Inky in the Nolan Hack Cup. one mile and a quarter, at Hawera on March 4. Since then Paddy Joe has had six starts in open company for three wins, a third, and a fourth. The immediate parents in Paddy Joe’s pedigree are English, but he runs back in tail female to the same Australian taproot as Desert Gold. He is by Parchment (a son of the English Derby winner Papyrus). and his dam is Choral Dance, by Coronach from Gay Step by Gay Lothario. Gay Step was brougnt over from Viciori'. by the late Mr C. Boyle, and for him .• he bred the Douro Cup winner. Gay Stroller, and Gay Fellow. Paddy Joe is the first foal of his dam. which raced only twice. Carbon Copy's Stud Career An unusual plan has been adopted : launching Carbon Copy as a sire. The Glen Devon Stud (Victoria), where' the horse will stand, has reserved book- j ings for marcs from New South Wales. In this way it is hoped to get a wide selection of mares with which to mate him. Carbon Copy is to.be given a comparatively light season, because it is hoped to race him again so that he can win about £2OOO and become the greatest stakewinning stallion in the history of the Australian turf. Ajax holds that position with £<4o.2< in stakes. The three horses above him in the list of winners—Phar Lap, Amounts, and Gloaming—were geldings. Carbon Copy is by Helios (imported), son of Hyperion. Helios is of particular: interest because his dam. Foxy Gal. is an American-bred mare, which was got by Sir Galahad II from Filante, which was by Sardanaple. Sir Gallahad was by Teddy from the gieat Spearmint mare. Plucky Liege, which produced other outstanding stallions in Bull Dog. Bois Roussel, and Admiral Drake. Bull Dog also stood in America, and his son, Eull Lea. sire of Citation, headed the sires’ list in America in the last Gainsborough, the sire of Hyperion, was out of Rosedrop, which was by St. Frusquin. a son of St. Simon. Hyperion's dam, Selene, was by Chaucer. also a son of St. Simon. Teddy, the sire of Sir Gallahad. was out of Rondeau, a mare by Bay Ronald. Plucky Liege was out of Concertina, a mare by St. Simon. When the Silk brothers selected Helios as the mate for the Australian-bred mare. Havers, they effectively brought together a great concentration of the St. Simon and Hampton blood. Havers has three imported ancestors in her second remove, her sire. Windbag, being by Magpie (imported) from Charleville. and her dam, Baba, by Comedy King (imported) from Harriet Graham (imported). a staying mare which won an Australian Cup. Magpie's sire descent is from Hampton through Bay Ronald and Dark Ronald, and. like Bayardo, Dark Ronald was out of a mare by St. Frusquin. This was Popinjay, a daughter of the great brood mare, Chelandiy, ancestress of many good Vinners in New Zealand. Charleville, the dam of Windbag, was by Charlemagne II (imported), a son of St. Simon. Her dam, Nithsevo, had a dash of Musket, a balance for the Musket in Plucky Liege. Comedy King (imported), the sire of Baba, was by * Persimmon, son of St. Simon and Perdita 11, which was by Hampton. Harriet Graham brought more St. Simon to the pedigree, since she was got by William the Third, a son of St. Simon. Answer to Correspondent •‘Timaru Reader.”—At Te Rapa on Saturday. the win and place totalisator handled £112.623 10s. and the doubles totalisator £8353, making a grand total of £121.276 10s NOMINATIONS FOR GREYMOUTH The following nominations have been received for the Greymouth Jockey Club's meeting on June 3:— WINTER HURDLES, of £160; one mile ana three-quarters.—All Pockets, Young John.
