HOME RULE FOR SCOTLAND

POLITICAL TALKS IN LONDON PROGRESS REPORTED BY COVENANT MOVEMENT (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, May 22. Political conversations on a Scottish National Covenant, to increase Scotland’s control over her home affairs, have been held recently in London. The tfllks were described by Mr John MacCormick. chairman of the Scottish National Assembly, as “most satisfactory.” Mr MacCormick said that developments which had occurred had assured that the Covenant campaign had entered a completely new phase. He continued: “Until now. we have been engaged in a task of propaganda, and of proving that behind the demand for Scottish self-government lies the support of the great majority of Scottish people. "That proof has now been given, and it is recognised by both the major political parties. This is shown by their willingness to discuss our claims with us. “We do not know to what extent they will concede our claims, but they are both willing to set up a Royal Commission to go into the whole question of English-Scottish relations. Wo shall welcome any such commission, but will in no way slacken our effort to set up an organiastion in Scotland capable of being a powerful expression of the will of the people. “We are holding a public tally in St. Andrew’s Hall. Glasgow, on May 24. when we will launch an appeal for a fighting fund of £lOO 000. The appeal will not be limited to Scotland, but an opportunitv will be given to persons in the Dominions, and in the United States to contribute.”
