GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL HOSTEL

GRANT FOR ALTERATION SOUGHT The crowded conditions at the Christchurch Girls’ High School hostel were discussed last evening at a meeting of the school’s board of managers. The headmistress. Miss J. I. Stewart. S 3 id she had received about 46 applications for accommodation next year. At present there were 70 girls at the hostel and there was not room for them all to have breakfast or tea at the same time. There had to be two “sittings” for each of these meals. Unless the necessary alterations could bo done at the hostel, the number of entries would have to be reduced. said Mr S. J. Irwin. The alterations which had been asked for were very modest, he considered. They included a new dining-room and the amalgamation of two front rooms to make a sitting-room for the girls. “I think the least we can expect is reasonable living accommodation for the pupils.” he said. It was agreed that a request for the grant necessary for the alterations be sent to the Post-primary Schools’ Board of Governors, to be forwarded to the Education Department.
