EVENING FLIGHT TO HAREWOOD

NEW SERVICE TO BE INTRODUCED LANDINGS FROM NORTH AT 7.30 P.M. A new late service from the North Island to Harewood is to be provided by the National Airways Corporation, probably early in July. Aircraft will be scheduled to land at Harewood at 7.30 p.m.—about an hour later than the previous late service to Harewood, which was cancelled on May 15. This information is contained in a’ letter from the general manager of the corporation (Mr F. Maurice Clarke) to Ihe Harewood Overseas Air Terminal Committee in which he replies to protests made by the committee about the cancellation of the service. Mr Clarke said that the reason for the cancellation nf the previous service was primarily for aircraft routing requirements and partly because the service had not been patronised to the same extent as the earlier services. Harewood was the nrincipal maintenance base for Douglas aircraft and it was necessary that these aircraft on service passed through the station for servicing at given periods. There” was certainly no question of any difficulty arising in the servicing of aircraft on late flights. Mr Clarke said. The previous late flight was well patronised during peak periods, but was the first to fall off during a traffic lull wh'le the earlier arrivals continued to carry full loadings. Mr Clarke said that the new service would probablv not be introduced until Julv 3. because bookings wore fairly heavy in some of the flights which would be affected by the adiustment of the timetable. An endeavour would be made, however, to make the adjustments before that date. Maintenance would present no problems and if was only the aspect of ups'Mtinr the arrangements of a consider q ble number of passengers already booked that might preclude the reintroduction of the late evening service at an earlier date.
