U.S. FUNDS FOR SOUTH ASIA
64,000,000 DOLLARS TO BE ALLOCATED PROJECT OUTLINED BY MR JAMES WEBB (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON. May 20. Five Soutji-east Asian countries will divide 64.000.000 dollars in American economic aid. according to their needs and ability to use funds quickly and effectively. This was stated to-day by the United States Under-Secretary of State (Mr James Webb). Mr Webb said that the help for IndoChina, Indonesia. Burma. Malaya, and Siam was designed to improve farm production, health conditions, and transport. Summarising the purpose of the re-cently-announced American aid project. Mr Webb said: “South-east Asia is rich in natural resources, but lacks certain commodities and technical facilities as a result of the war's attrition. Our aim is to help the democratic Governments in these countries to overcome their temporary handicaps.”
