WAIKATO WINTER MEETING

DUKE ROYAL WINS STEEPLES CONSPIRACY’S SURPRISE WIN "The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, May 21. Duke Royal gave a good performance when he won the Waikato Steeplechase, the main event <6n the second day of the Waikato Racing Club’s winter meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday. Duke Royal led throughout, and scored decisively from Savile Row and Golden Reign. He was 7, 6 in the betting, paying £l5 17s 6d for a win and £3 3s for a place. The day was sensational for the reason that there was a record dividend on the doubles totalisator, which paid £3596 8s for 10s on the winning combination, Duke Royal and Conspiracy. There were only two winning tickets. The top-weight and favourite, Caber Fae, won the chief flat event, the President’s Handicap, very easily from Kilfen’ora and Earldale. Caber Fae went to the front more than half a mile from home, and scored by eight lengths. Tifox also showed good form when he was victorious in the Seddon Hurdles. He was an outsider, and paid £2B 19s 6d to win. Caber Fae, Trusting, and Thinker were the only favourites to win, and there were some good dividends. Easily the greatest surprise was Conspiracy's win in the Stewards’ Handicap. It was his first start since February, and hitherto he had been regarded more as a middle distance runner than as a sprinter. Conspiracy paid £2lB for a win and £27 3s 6d for a place. Although the weather was fine, the course was heavy after rain during the week. The win and place totalisator handled £112,613 10s, and the doubles totalisator £8653, making a grand total of £121,276 10s. The turnover on the second day last year was £106,027 (win and place betting only). The investments for the first two days of the meeting are £216,201 10s, against £189,285 10s last year. Waikato Steeples The Waikato Steeplechase was an interesting contest, with Duke Royal always the winner in the run from the last fence, in spite of challenges from Savile Row, Golden Reign, and Jon Rosa. Duke Royal ran to the front immediately, and with a round to go he was out 12 lengths from Golden Reign, Savile Row, and Gaiety, which were close together ahead of Hazsoult, Jon Rosa, and Flying Attack. Going along the back, Golden Reign, Savile Row, and Gaiety moved up to within three lengths of Duke Royal. Jon Rosa also improved his position. Duke Royal led over the last fence just clear of Savile Row. Golden Reign, Jon Rosa, and Gaiety. Duke Royal ran on strongly and won by eight lengths from Savile Row. Golden Reign was another two lengths and a half away third, and Jon Rosa was fourth, followed at intervals by Gaiety, Roman Ned, Flying Attack, and Corineus. Beau Court fell at the first fence and Glenfayle at the same fence in the second round. Hazsoult was pulled up. The placed horses all put up good performances. Duke Royal was improved after his race on the first day, when he was second to Hazsoult, and he led throughout. He is a good stayer which acts well in heavy going, and is now likely to be one of the favourites for the Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie. It was only Duke Royal’s third attempt at steeplechasing, at which he may prove very good. On the day he was probablv a little more fit than Savile Row, wh’ich should be right at the top of his form for Ellerslie. . Corineus was very lame behind atter pulling up.

Conspiracy’s Win Conspiracy finished too well for his opponents in the Stewards’ Handicap, and he won going away. There was a great race for second, Tiger Tan just beating Mere Ana. ~ . . ... Silver Blue began very quickly to lead to the home turn from Chatril, with Tiger Tan Mere Ana, The Bat, Brown Derby, and Master Orelio all prominent in a close-running field. A great race was in progress at. the furlong post when Conspiracy shot through an opening to win bv a length from Tiger Tan. Mere Ana was half a length away third, and Master Orelio was fourth ahead of Florida, The Bat, Bedivere, Lady Revel, Brown Derby, and Swift Robin. The Seddon Hurdles provided a fine finish Tifox coming from a good way back with a solid run on the rails, and winning from the Riccarton-trained Sailor Girl, which also finished well. Niloch and Young Bob made the running for about a mile and a quarter, when Tremello went up fast to take the lead. Tremello was first into the straight, followed closely by Forest Ranger, Niloch, Young Bob. and Sailor Girl, with Tifox moving up on th Tremeilo and Tifox were the leaders over the last fence. Tifox going on we 1 to win by a neck from Sailor Girl, which came up' on the outside to cut. Tremello out of second by a neck. Niloch was fourth, followed by Foveran and Gay Fellow.
