FORESTRY DEPARTMENT EXPENSES

Sir, —We have heard a great deal from Ministers about huge losses in various Gpvernment departments. Lei us hope that the Minister of Forestry, will run a fine tooth comb through his' department. Judging by the vast amount being spent on the roading scheme, etc., on the ridiculous little forestry project at Omihi—a patch which should never have been planted in trees in any case--there should be room for a considerable reduction in expenditure in the Forestry Department throughout New Zealand. It would be interesting to know the total cost to the taxpayer to date, and the estimated future cost of this Dtate forest in Omihi.—Yours, etc., TAXPAYER. May 11, 1950.

[The Conservator of New Zealand Forest Service of Canterbury (Mr L. H. Bailey) said: “Five hundred acres at Omihi were planted with trees .‘o smother nassella tussock at the request of the Nassella Tussock Board. The road referred to is one and a quarter miles, formed, to get trees and workmen on to the area and to furnish access for future maintenance and fire prevention work.”]
