Mrs F. E. Burrell, of Christchurch, has been appointed South Island woman vice-president of the National Party. Miss Joyce Barrell has gained the A.R.C.M. performers’ diploma in piano playing. Miss Barrell intends to remain for a third year at?the Royal Academy of Music before returning to Christchurch in 1951.

Mr and Mrs J. Rees, of Westport, celebrated their golden wedding on Wednesday, and among the many congratulatory telegrams and messages they received was one from the Mayor and Mayoress of Westport (Mr and Mrs J. M. Robertson) and one from Surgeon-Captain Osborne, manager of the British Isles Rugby team, on behalf of the Welsh members of the team who were entertained during their visit to Westport at the weekend by 'Mr and Mrs Rees. Both Mr and Mrs Rees are natives of Wales, and have lived in New Zealand for more than 30 years, the last 25 in Westport. One new member was welcomed by the vice-president (Mrs Rowberry), who presided at the twelfth annual meeting of the West of England Women’s Association. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs Easterbrook; vice-presidents, Mesdames Booth and Green; secretarytreasurer, Mrs Browning; committee. Mesdames Garlick and Weston.

A talk on the origin of drama was given by Mrs Rankin at the monthly meeting of the Linwood branch of the Dominion Federation of Townswomen's Guilds. The president (Mrs A. Rippen) and Mrs K. Mundy were appointed delegates to represent the branch at a meeting to be held soon to discuss area federation in Christchurch. Three new members were welcomed. Several members offered to billet representatives attending the annual conference. The convener of the-arts and crafts circle (Mrs Eyres) reported that she had demonstrated the making of a knitted toy, and that Mrs Cox had demonstrated the making of a velvet rose at the last meeting of the circle. The competition for the afternoon vzas won by Mrs Cox, with Mrs Eyres second. A demonstration on the making of felt hats was given-by Mrs T. Johnson at a meeting of the Home Economics Association. Mrs C. T. Ferris presided. Those who took part in an amusing sketch presented by members of the Mount Pleasant Drama Group were Mesdames J. Mason, McGregor Smith. C. Harbut, M. Cowan, and S. Cropp. During the afternoon two members of the association, Mesdames C. Foster and C. Davies conducted a questionnaire, and Mrs C. E. Wardle entertained with humorous items.

Mrs J. B. Tonar. a former mayoress of No” th cote, has died at the age of 80. She lived at Northcote for the last 50 years. She was one of the foundation members of the Northcote Women’s Progress League. Mrs Tonar became an invalid 20 years ago, but to that time she took an active part in all welfare work. During the 1918 epidemic it w r as mainly on her initiative that the Northcote School was converted into a temporary hospital where she helped in the nursing.

“The lack of new ballet dancers is causing much concern in England,” said Miss Joan Watts, the English examiner for the Royal Academy of Dancing, yesterday. She said that the winner of the New Zealand 1948 scholarship. Donald McAlpine, of Auckland, was with the second Sadler’s Wells Company. “If only New Zealand children and students could see more of companies such as this, I feci they would have more incentive to work,” she said.

A Papanui Residents’ Association was formed at a public meeting on Thursday night. The first object of the association will be to establish a women’s rest room in the Papanui shopping area. The following officers were elected: president. Mr M. Fox; secretary. Mr I. M. Scott; committee, Mesdames Haines. Perera. Renwick, Messrs Wilson, Macguire. Wright. Dawson. Renwick, and Scott.
