SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS
MR ALGIE’S COMMENT
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 19. “If we are to have better paid teachers engaged in handling smaller classes, it is obvious that we will have to make a further call on the' resources of the taxpayer,” said the Minister of Education. (Mr R. M. Algie) to-day. He was commenting on recent statements at various education board meetings throughout the country at which the shortage of teachers was discussed, but “I believe,” said Mr Algie, “with some justification tha.t if those of us who are engaged in the teaching profession in one sense or another can convince. the public of the soundness of our system., and the worthwhileness of its product, we will have a ready and genefous response from taxpayers.” Mr Algie described the education board comments on the teacher shortage as “unfortunately too true.” He said officers of the Education Department were very well aware of the exact nature of the problem and were doing all in their power to overcome the difficulty.
