THEFT OF PARACHUTE SIGNAL FLARES

“HIGHLY DANGEROUS” EQUIPMENT MISSING (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 19. Twenty-nine highly dangerous parachute signal flares are hidden somewhere near the patent slip in Evans Bay, Wellington. This was disclosed in the Children’s Court yesterday when two boys, aged 10 and 11, were charged with stealing 32 parachute signal flares and two flare guns from the lifeboats of the Hualalai when the ship was at the patent slip. The police said that three flares and both guns had been recovered, but the other flares were still missing and were highly dangerous in unpractised hands The younger boy denied all knowledge of the thefts, but the other said that they took two boxes of flare equipment, which they hid in gorse near the slip. Both boys were admonished.
