LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN BRITAIN

ELECTIONS NEXT MONTH (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON April 21. More than 14.000 candidates will stand for election to nearly 7500 seats in county and municipal borough councils and urban district councils in Britain next month. After the General Election of 1945 Labour made considerable gains, particularly in boroughs. The borough councillors now retiring are those elected in 1946 and urban district councillors are those elected in the spring of 1947. In those places where Labour gains were made more Labour than Conservative councillors will be retiring. In urban, rural and small borough areas where similar progress was not made the Conservatives will be defending more seats than they will be attacking.
