HISTORY OF PAPANUI
Sir,—ln reply to D. MacMillan’s inquiry, yes. Samuel Treleaven settled in Papanui in 1851. He built a home at the corner of North and Sawyers Arms roads, and a sawmill for milling timber in the bush there. He owned good teams of bullocks and laid the foundation of Papanui and North roads, the first process being carting and laying bandies of manuka scrub in boggy places. He later built and' operated a flourmill at the Styx andi farmed a large area of land there. He J bui’t the B idge Inn Hotel, later called the S'*ven Mile Peg. and conducted it for many years. The fam ly association with New Zealand dates back to 1845. —Yours, etc., FAMILY HISTORIAN. April 21, 1950.
