WAIMATE CLUB’S MEETING

RACING V

ELOFA DECISIVELY WINS CUP FOUR WINNERS FROM RICCARTON Riccarton stables provided the winners of the totalisator double at the Wteimate Racing Club’s annual meeting on Saturday, Elofa winning the Waimate Cup and Aegina the Waitangi Hack Handicap. The doubles dividend was £l7 17s for £l. Both wins were decisive. Elofa, which had been in close touch with the pacemakers throughout, reached the front inside the furlong, and established a winning margin of a length and te half. Aegina, minor place-getter in her two races at the Oamaru meeting the previous week, impressively overcame the disadvantage of a tardy start. She had only two horses behind her after a furlong, but she maintained a long run without suspicion of weakening to win by the good margin of two lengths. Riccarton-trained horses won four of the six galloping races, Eulogize and Cue being winners in addition to Elofa and Aegina. Eulogize and Cue are trained by J. S. Shaw, owner-trainer of the champion three-year-old Beaumaris. It was Cue’s first win for his North Island owner, Mr W. A. lorns, a steward of the Wellington Racing Club, but the big Finis three-year-old, in his present form, should continue to race well.

The meeting was held in fine weather. The totalisator handled £19,397 10s, including £1224 in doubles betting, compared with £23,695 10s last year. Waimate Cup Elofa won the Waimate Cup much more decisively than he had won the Timaru Cup at his previous start. He had the race in safe keeping at the half-furlong, but there was an exciting finish for the minor placings, the outsider, Bren Gun securing second place by half a head from Open Sky. Open Sky and Bren Gun took up the running in the first furlong, and they were followed at the six furlongs by Bright News, Balkis, Elofa, and Eulogize, Crease and Terminate being at the tail of the field.

Elofa followed Open Sky and Bren Gun into the straight, and he had their measure at the furlong. Kept up to his work by W. B. Jacobs, Elofa went on to win by a length and a half from Bren Gun, whose margin from Open Sky was half a head.

Broie finished strongly wide out to take fourth place, just shading Oronoko, Bright News, and Balkis.

Falconbridge, the previous winner of the race, lost his chance by refusing to jump away until the others had covered nearly a furlong.

Led Throughout Bosun made a successful first appearance for Dr. A. W. Owen-Johnston and Mr A. H. Ryder, winning the President’s Handicap comfortably from his bracketed mate. Faithful Pal. It was Bosun’s first appearance in open company. Theocritus and Bosun were out in front setting a strong pace after a furlong, and racing past the three furlongs they were four lengths clear of the favourite. All Serene, which was followed by Winning Gem and Faithful Pal. Theocritus was beaten early in the run home, and Bosun kept clear of Faithful Pal, which, characteristically, finished well. All Serene also made up ground in the straight to finish half a length behind Faithful Pal.

Winning Gem was fourth, ahead of Connaught, for which permission was given to race without plates. Eulogize’s High-weight Eulogize ran to the front before the straight was reached in the Studholme High-weight, and he kept clear of the fast-finishing Money Lender inside the last furlong to win by a length. Rival Chase was last away, and after several changes in the early running Zorro took charge near the six furlongs from Wee Mac, Eulogize, Bon Chale, Zarcon, and Money Lender. Eulogize ran past Zorro in the run to the home turn, and they were followed into the straight by Zarcon and Money Lender. Money Lender challenged solidly, but Eulogize ran on w*ell to record his fourth win for the season. Zorro was a fair third ahead of Zarcon, Volomai, and Rival Chase. Paper Raid’s Win Levant was a strong favourite for the Trial Plate, but she was just beaten into second place by Paper Raid, which finished strongly next to the rails. There was only a head between these two at the finish, but they were clear of the others. Kandahar gave ground at the start, Haar, Neptune’s Daughter, and Marcus being the leaders along the back, with Top Note, Paper Raid, Levant, and Air Travel most prominent of the others. Levant followed Marcus and Neptune’s Daughter into the straight, and her chances looked bright when she got their measure. Paper Raid challenged and finished a shade better to win narrowly. Top Note made up ground in the straight for third, ahead of Marcus and Neptune’s Daughter. Bengal fell in the straight, his jockey, A. M. Ellis, escaping with a shaking. Aegina Impressive Honours of the Waitangi Hack Handicap rested strongly with the winner, Aegina. The three-year-old Defaulter filly did not begin quickly from the inside barrier position, and her winning effort called for a long sustained run from well back in the field.

Aegina had seven horses in front of her at the five furlongs, but she closed the gap to the pacemakers. Happy Hunter, Silver Clipper, and Flying Agnes in the run across the top. Happy Hunter ran into a clear lead early in the run home, but firjt Aegina. and then Dark Chief ran past him. Aegina won decisively by two lengths. Silver Clipper was fourth, followed by Flying Agnes and Excellent Flight. Finished Well

, Cue was never further back than fourth in the Farewell Hack Handicap, and he finished boldly to win comfortably by three lengths from Pacific Edition. Symbolic, which had run into a clear lead before the straight was reached, tired into third place three lengths further back. Cue gave trouble at the barrier, but when taken to the outside started well. After two furlongs, he was in fourth position behind Night Ruler. Symbolic, and Chord, and he was being followed by Pacific Edition. Top Class, Penny Pie, and Eyemark. Chord and Symbolic were disputing the lead at the half-mile, but after another furlong Chord started to feel the strain. Symbolic led into the straight, but Cue soon challenged and won going away.
