A state of emergency over, the removal of cargo from the Auckland wharves was announced to-day in a joint statement issued by the Auckland HarbOur Boatd, the Cargo Control Committee, and a committee representing commercial, shipping, and transport interests. The Cargo Control Committee will exercise its emergency war-time powers to ensure the prompt transfer of cargoes from the wharves. “Under these powers, goods On the Auckland wharves which are nnt promptly removed to allow the efficient discharge of vessels at berths will be removed to off-wharf storage.” Said the joint statement. ♦ “In addition, it will be requited that consignees in Auckland shall keep their premises opeh outside norffial hours of work to receive cargo removed ftbm the wharves outside normal hours. “The community is asked to appreciate that the unloading ahd loading of ships proceeds generally for 59 hours each week. It is therefore necessary fbr the other fcettidhs of industry concerned with the moving oi cargo over the wharves to make their hours of work conform with those worked on the Waterfront 9 “It is realised that there may be some difficulty concerning the staffs engaged by these firms, and the committee makes an appeal to every employer and employee to help in this emergency, and relieve the existing congestion.”
