NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN
Mrs G. W. Fairweather presided at the monthly meeting of the National Council of Women last evening. The question of Greek children, discussed at the February meeting, was again referred to. Miss M. G. Havelaar read a letter from the headquarters in Switzerland of the International Council of Women reporting that at a recent meeting of the board of officers of the International Council, in Brussels, it was decided to write to Marshal Tito in Jugoslavia and to the Prime Ministers of Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and Albania on behalf of deported Greek children. The letters ask that the recipients, rising above political considerations, should restore the Greek children to their parents and point out that the international council comprises women fronx, 29 countries lying in five continents.
The secretary at Geneva asked the National Council of Women to spread information on the action of the international council and she undertook to advise branches immediately of the replies received from the Governments concerned.
Three remits from, the Auckland branch of the council, two from the Grey mouth branch, and four from the Manawatu branch -were -referred to branches for consideration, decisions to be reported at the next meeting.
The conference of the Pan-Pacific Women’s Association to be held in Christchurch in February. 1952, was discussed and the advsability of forming groups of from eight to 10 members to study matters to be brought forward at the conference was emphasised. Miss M. V. Kennedy said she was compiling a list of reference books which would supply much information on the two main questions to be discussed at the conference —food and East and West cutures. She announced that many useful books could be obtained through the inter-library loan system, by which all libraries belonging to the New Zealand Library Association could obtain non-fiction books on loan from other centres.
