AUTUMN MEETING AT TRENTHAM
RACING
CALIBRATE MAY BEAT b BEAUMARIS
SWEET SPRAY FAVOURED FOR STAKES
Voltaic will attempt to win the North Island Challenge Stakes for the second time on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting tomorrow, but the task may be beyond him if Sweet Spray is at her best. Voltaic beat the high-class gallopers Excellency, Citril, and Tauloch in the race last year, and he has had a race-winning preparation for his attempt to win this race for the second time. He was much too good for the sprinters he met at Masterton last Saturday, and at his previous appearance he won the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui for the third time. It will take a galloper much above the average to beat Voltaic to-morrow, but Sweet Spray has the ability. Although she nearly made history when she finished second to Swanee in the Auckland Cup. and then went on to beat the celts in the Great Northern Derby, Sweet Spray's best recommendation for her race to-morrow is her win in the Stewards’ Handicap at Hiccerton last November. That was a superb performance. Few gallopers could have given the brilliant Swayup such a start and a beating that day. To do so Sweet Spray went within a fraction of breaking Irish Note’s New Zealand six furlongs record of Imin 9sec. Sweet Spray has had little luck this season on her visits to Trentham. She developed a heavy cold when taken there for the spring meeting last October and could not race. At the summer meeting she was plainly out of sorts, feeling the effects of a skin disease, yet she ran Tudor Prince to half a head in the Trentham Stakes.
Although Tudor Prince has made his name over longer journeys, he has sprinting ability, and will not be out oft his ground against Voltaic and Sweet Spray. At the Wellington summer meeting in January he ran in the Telegraph Handicap on the first day, finishing fifth, after getting a bad run.
Beaumaris will probably run in the Autumn Handicap. If so. he will dispute favouritism with Calibrate. Beaumaris will be ridden by L. J. Ellis, who was Calibrates rider when the Contact gelding easily won the Summer Handicap at Trentham in January. Calibrate will be ridden to-morrow by the leading horseman. W. J. Broughton. Calibrate has not started since he won e Wellington Racing Club Handicap J'Tp l and the Summer Handicap with January. He has be en raised to e-12 for the Autumn Handicap, which is run ©ver one mile and a half, the same as the two races he won in JanuCalibrate races well on both hard and soft tracks and his powerful finishing run from the back of the field may carry rum to his sixth win of the season tomorrow.
. Beaumaris has done well at Riccarton Knee the January meeting at Trentham where he won the Wellington Cup, was by '£ ud J ? r Prf nce in the Cloam-ng Stakes, and finished third to Z udo £ and Swe€t Spray in the Trentham Stakes. He will carry 8-11 a good weight for a three-year-old, but not 32? ? n £ of his calib re. He has the ability to take up a handy place in running, and L. J. Ellis should be ,able to keep him clear of trouble, i Record in sight :4. ' Wet Weather Prospect • Renowned ran good races at the New end Wellington Cup meetings, • but her latest efforts have not inspired • Her chance would be favi cured, however, on a heavy track. Beau-Or has won his last two races, but aid not run at Masterton last Saturday ~o f t - e flrT nness of the track. « Sir Beau five-year-old finished solidly to win the Earle Stakes narrowly at Wanganui, the track being affected by rain. He then won the Woodville Handicap with 8-6, finishing ahead of some good handicap horses, including Distlnc- ? on ’i w J n 2 er of the Jnain rape at Masterton last Saturday. - Night Owl may not be the least formidable of the South Island candidates. He showed encouraging form in the main race at Wingatui last Saturday, finishing Strongly into third place behind Kosher and Salmon Spear. The distance should not trouble this Nightly gelding. Has Good Form
Patuone has developed good form recently. His last three starts have produced a win with 7-0 in the Takapuna Cup, a third in the A.R.C. Services’ Handicap, and a win in the Te Aroha Herries Memorial Handicap with 7-10. This four-year-old Probation gelding will probably have a strong Auckland following. Vane Master was narrowly beaten by Distinction at Masterton last Saturday. He would have won but for moving out from the rails in the straight, allowing Distinction to get through in the last few strides. Vane Master carried 8-6 in that race. To-morrow he has 8-2. Super Snipe ran sound races at the summer meeting at Trentham. She was fifth in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, one mile and a half, with 7-9, and second to Calibrate in the Summer Handicap, one rejig and a half, with 7-9. Earlier she had won the Hawke’s Bay New Year Handicap, one mile and a quarter, with 7-10. Calibrate beat her easily in the Summer Handicap, and though she comes in this time on sJlb better terms, he should beat her again. However,. Super Snipe has thrived in her recent training and appeals as. a likely place-getter. Balmacara won the A.R.C. Services' Handicap with 7-3, was. beaten a nose with 7-13 in the Eg mon t Cup—-Lord
Tonks Stakes, one mile and a quaver. With 8-4.
Flying Control advanced considerably in favour with his clear-cut win at Motukarara last Saturday, and the best of the North Island light-weights may be Birdman. This Pictavia three-year-old was unfortunate in the main race at Masterton last Saturday. His rider lost nis irons a round from home, and for the concluding nine furlongs Harris could be of little assistance to his mount. With 7-1 Birdman’s chance must be respected. Kosher won at Wingatui last Saturday, but he may not be up to the class which this race will bring together. Night Rider showed good form in hack grade at Trentham in January, but he has not yet won in open company. Selections are:—
