WAGES OF BUS DRIVERS
ARBITRATION COURT DISCUSSION
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 8.
“Workers cannot expect an increase in wages every five or six months or so.” said Mr E. R. Anderson, advocate for the employers, when hearing the New Zealand Passenger Drivers’ Employees’ industrial dispute, which was resumed in the Arbitration Court today. Mr Anderson said bus drivers had a wage increase last June and could not expect another now. The Federation of Labour asked for an adjustment, he said, and then the workers’ union followed . with a request for further adjustment. Yet most of the workers were getting £l4 or £l5 for little more than 40 hours’ work a week. Mr F. C. Allerby, the employees’ assessor: What about company profits? Mr Anderson said that it was never the Court’s action to take into consideration the profit or loss of the companies concerned in fixing wages.
