CAGED DEFENDANTS AT AN ITALIAN TRIAL.—A courtroom scene at Abbadia, San Salvatore, Italy, recently, during the mass trial of 127 men charged with taking part in an armed rising in the town. Forty-eight of the accused filled an iron cage, and the others stood under guard on the courtroom floor, The rising was stated to have taken place in 1948 at the time of the attempted assassination of the Italian Communist leader, Mr Palmiro Togliatti.
