Rough Riders’ Anniversary.— On Saturday, members of the Rough Riders will meet to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their departure for South Africa on February 17, 1900. The Rough Riders, who numbered 264, were the first organised body of fighting men ever to leave New Zealand, and left for South Africa, under the command of Major Jowsey, of Timaru. The secretary and organiser (Mr A. Syme), said that as far as he knew there were only two officers of the Rough Riders alive. They are Captain F. L. Bourn and Lieutenant F. G. Tucker, who both live in South Africa. The only surviving non-commisioned officer is Sergeant-Major Pleasants, who lives in Auckland. Mr Syme was a trumpeter.
