“INITIATION” OF NEW BOYS
MR ALGIE’S OBJECTIONS
(New Zealand Press Association i AUCKLAND, February 15.
Initiation ceremonies involving physical or mental distress to a new boy entering school are objectionable and merely an excuse for bullying, in the opinion of the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie),‘expressed in a letter to the mother of a boy entering I: Kuiti District High School this year. The mother had written to the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) expressing concern about initiation ceremonies.
A copy of the mother's letter and the Minister’s reply were read at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board to-day.
. “I am assured this attitude is shared by Education Department officers and all teachers generally,” wrote Mr Algie. “At one time such practices were common to almost all schools; but the custom, which is merely an excuse for bullying, is dying out.” The board will circulate the Minister's letter to schools, endorsed with its own similar views.
