FAITHFUL PAL AT ORARI
I RACING x
transferred after win ON SATURDAY Faithfui Pal, which has been trained for most of his races by C. G. Humphries, of Riccarton, was transferred to L. H. Pratt s Orari stable shortly after he won the Craven Plate at Riccarton on Saturday. He will continue to race in the interests of Dr. A. W. Owen-Johnston and Mr A. H. Ryder, of Invercargill Faithful Pal is the first living produce of Rodeur, which later left Excellency, one of the best race mares of recent years. He has been a good winner in sprint company since he was sold to his present owners, though he has fallen a lithe short of the best standard. His record so far this season is nine starts for three wins and a third. Creditable Effort / Although he had no chance with the winner. Great Way, the three-year-old County Tyrone was a creditable second in the Trial Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday. He made up ground on the inner in the straight and just shaded Puck for second. County Tyrone is by Top Row’, a smart sprinter, from the Nightly mare. Prairie Moon. He was bred and is raced by Mr T. E. K. Dawson, and trained at Riccarton by E. J. Jennings.
County Tyrone traces to the imported mare Ormolu, so he belongs to the same family as that good stayer Count Cavour, which w’on the New Zealand Cup and Trentham Gold Cup, as well as the New Zealand Derby, Great Northern Derby, New' Zealand St. Leger, D. J. C. McLean Stakes, Dunedin Guineas, and Duneuin Cup. Another member of this family was King’s Trumpeter, winner of the Hawke's Bay Guineas and J. D. Ormond Gold Cup. Promising Galloper
Boniface. a three-year-old halfbrother by Robin Goodfellow to Revelry, showed ability by finishing well for fourth in the Trial Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday. It was only his third race, and if he makes the improvement expected of him with experience, he should soon be a winner for Mr H. D. Greenwood. Bomface just shaded his bracketed mate, Moonsail, which is one of the last of Salmagundi’s stock. They are both trained at Riccarton by C. E. Howard, who was granted a licence a time ago. From Good Family
The Wellington owner, Mr G. A. Lang, who races Royal Tan, appears to have another stayer in the making in Robin Dayes, winner of the Lyttelton Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. Patiently handled by C. T. Wilson, the Robin Goodfellow three-year-old did not become prominent until the furlong, but finished strongly to win going away by a length and a half.
Robin Dayes is the second produce of the Philamor mare Sanction. This is the Miss Kate family, one of the mpst remarkable families in the Stud Book, with the great gallopers Carbine, Phar Lap, and Kindergarten among its members. Other distinguished members of this family were Greek Shepheard, Golden Souvenir, Al-Sirat, Bridge Acre, Hot Pursuit, Swingalong, and many others. Back in Work The Riccarton trainer, R. P. Register, has Piccolo and Sailor Girl back in work. Piccolo was brought to New Zealand from Australia earlier in the season, but did not look like standing up to work and was put aside. Sailor Girl showed useful form as a hurdler last season, winning once and being placed twice. This season she earned place money twice at the Grand National meeting before being put aside. Southland Bloodstock Sale Seventy-two entries have been received for the first annual Southland bloodstock sale to be held at Invercargill on Wednesday of next week. There are 28 brood mares, 14 yearlings, 10 two-year-olds, and 20 racehorses and untried stock. One of the most prominent vendors is Mr W. D. McLeod, of Mandeville, who will offer Wantwood, winner of the Stewards’ Handicap in 1947, Mandeville, and Laughter, a three-year-old filly by Christopher Robin from Stone Frigate. He also has a number of other entries. The Riverton trainer, M. Corkery, will put winners in King Gundi and Haughty Boa up for auction, as well as a yearling half-sister to the latter. Another interesting entry among the untried horses is a three-year-old gelding by Baffles from the good jumping mare, Lochcorrib, a half-brother to Galway Bay, a winner in Australia earlier in the season. To Resume Training Dark Arrow’, which has been spelling on the West Coast, will be brought back into work this week by the Riccarton trainer, C. G. Humphries. The Nightly six-year-old failed to win a race in his seven starts earlier this season, but he ran two seconds, a third, and three fourths. He was runner-up to Julius Caesar in the Winter Cup at the Grand National meeting. Not Consistent Tenor Royal scored his most important success when he won the Wanganui Cup on Saturday. The Royal Chief gelding does not always produce his best form, but that may be accounted for by the hoof trouble from which he suffers. He was considered a strong light-weig it prospect for the Wellington Cup, but was never a possibility. He was prominent to the straight in the main handicap on the second day at Trentham, but failed over the final stages and finished well Robin’s Reward advanced his stake earnings to £16,422 10s by running second to Tenor Royal. He made a game attempt to win the race for the second time, finishing strongly after being forced to cover extra ground. The Robin Goodfellow six-year-old is now awkwardly placed in the weights, but he should add to his stake winnings. Doubles Betting
