DIVING

10METRE EVENT BEGINS P. HEATLY BEATS ATHANS (CANADA) From Our Own Reporter AUCKLAND, February 7. Consistently good diving by Peter Heatly (Scotland) gave him a sixpoint lead over George Atbans (Canada) in the 10-metre diving event at the Olympic Pool, Newmarket today. F. Murphy (Australia) was third. The diving was held in perfect weather before a capacity house. Athans, who was well up - with Heatly in the first four rounds, missed rather badly in the fifth round to give Heatly a good lead. Murphy did not have quite so much boldness or finish as Heatly or Athans, but gave quite a good display. Owen Jaine (New Zealand), who has been out of the water for a few days because of a knee injury. was completely outclassed. Women’s Diving Diving with boldness and confidence in the first section of the women’s springboard event, Miss Edna Child (England), fifth in the women’s springboard event at the last Olympic Games, scored 66.55 points, six and a half points more than Miss Noeline Maclean, of Australia, who is running second. The Canadians, Misses E. Buchanan and L. Hunt, occupy third and fourth place respectively, with Miss Mayzod Reid, of New Zealand, in fifth place. Miss Maclean seemed rather lucky to receive such good points for some of her dives, as she did not get a great deal of height. However, she made some neat entries. Miss Reid, although extremely nervous, dived right up to her best form and is in fifth place, with the other two New Zealand representatives. Misses J. Carpenter and B. Moore, occupying seventh and eighth places. Results were:— MEN’S TOWER DIVING (10-metre Platform) Section A P. Heatly (Scotland), 87 03 points .. 1 T. Athans (Canada). 81.89 points 2 F.
