BRITISH CONSERVATIVES CRITICISED

Manifesto Called “Dishonest Document”

MR ATTLEE SPEAKS IN OWN CONSTITUENCY

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, February 7. The Conservative Party’s programme for the British General Election was a dishonest, vote-catching document, mAI Mr Attlee, when he opened his election campaign in his own constituency of West Walthamstow, Essex, last night. Sixteen hundred persons heard him speak. Mr Attlee said that the Conservatives’ programme had some good things in it, but they happened to be things that the Labour Party had done. The Conservatives advocated the calling of an Imperial economic conference, but the Labour Government had been in constant touch with the Commonwealth, and the machinery of had been going on for four years and a half. Mr Attlee said that what shocked him most was the suggestion that aU Britain’s recovery was the result of Marshall aid. Other countries had had Marshall aid, and had not done as well. Britain had also given help to other countries. In a prostrate world, it was Britain and the United States which had kept together and helped others who were suffering more than they.
