COURT COMPLIMENTS POLICE

MEN ADMIT CHARGES OF CAR CONVERSION (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, February 7. Two young men arrested at Westport last week pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to charges of breaking, entering and theft, and of converting cars. They were commited to the Supreme Court at Christchurch for sentence.

The accused were Nelson Gordon Carson, aged 19, of Christchurch, and David Arcnibaid, aged 22, of Wellington. They were remanded to Christchurch on a farther charge of breaking and entering the counting house of Hume D. Christie, Ltd., Victoria street, Christchurch, and committing the crime of theft.

“I think it only right to add that the police are to be complimented on the admirable celerity with- which they cleaned up these offences,” said the Magistrate, Mr H. J. Thompson. The Charger arose from an escapade described in the accused’s statements read in Court. On January 28 they travelled from Christchurch to Mctueka in a stolen car. Next day thev entered the home of Walter G. Harford and while there were disturbed and chased by Finlay Gillespie, a taxidriver partner of Harford’s. They escaped in the car but ran out of petrol. After sleeping on the road for the night they took Norman Horrell’s car. They abandoned this car in a damaged condition as a result of a collision with the bridge at Stanley Brook. The two men were given a lift to Westport where they were arrested on January 31.
