MERCY FLIGHT FROM FIJI IN BAD WEATHER

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 7. Flying through heavy tropical showers with a very low ceiling and poor visibility, a Royal New Zealand Air Force Catalina flying-boat from Fiji made a smart mercy flight when a call was received for aid from a neighbouring island, reports Air Force Headquarters, Wellington. The flight was to Waiyevo, on the west coast of Taveuni. 130 miles from Suva.' where a woman was seriously ill. The aircraft had to come down through rain and alight off-shore in the open sea, which was only possible because there vzas no wind and the sea was calm. The captain of the aircraft was Pilot D. B. Flintoff, of Christchufch. The woman was taken to hospital and, the report says, this mercy flight safely executed in adverse weather, earned the commendation of the medical authorities. ~ .
