An 18in layer of anow made the Nicosia airport unusable. From Lisbon, too. come reports of heavy snowfalls and blocked roads in Northern Portugal and the Estrela Mountains. Gales of 70 miles an hour, accompanied by heavy rain, caused serious damage to Oporto and heavy £ eas buffeted most ports.
