GODLEY HOUSE

Sir, —In this centenary year of Canterbury it is of interest to recall and revere the work of the early pioneers. By placenames many are remembered, but some places are misnamed. One, for instance, the magnificent residence built about 1878 at Diamond Harbour by the late Harvey Hawkins, has for some years borne the name Godley House. Surely the cottage still standing at Lyttelton, which was where Robert Godley lived, should be named Godley House and not the home. The Knowle, cf Breakwater Hawkins, as he was known in Lyttelton. Can these be remedied? —Yours, etc., INTERESTED. February 6, 1950.
