BRASS BAND CONTEST

Sir, —May I ask the following questions regarding the brass band contest? What day or night are the “A” test selections being held and what music is to be played? When and at what time are the “B” and “C” test selections being played, and what music has been chosen? Is the hymn test own selection? Is the quickstep own selection? Are souvenir programmes to be produced covering the contest activities? Certain advertisements have so far appeared in “The Press,” but the much desired information set out above was not mentioned. A generous number of people will be indeed grateful for your esteemed reply.—Yours, etc., ESSEX. February 3, 1950. [“The championship bands compete on Tuesday, February 21, and Thursday, February 23, the test music being Mozart’s ’Fantasia in F,’ arranged by Malcolm Sargent, and ’Morning Rhapsody,’ a symphonic poem by Eric Ball. The ’B’ grade is in two sections, the first section is renamed ‘A’ grade. Pre? vious ‘A’ grade bands/now belong to the championship grade. The ‘A* grade test music js a descriptive work on an episode in the life of ’Henry V,’ composed by Malawin Price, and a symphonic poem. ‘Music for Brass’ by Denis Wright. These selections will be presented on Monday and Wednesday of contest week, immediately following the *B’ grade tests. Selected music for the,‘B’ grade is a dramatic overture, ‘Clive of India,’ by Joseph Holbrooke, and ‘Four Preludes,’ by Eric Ball. ‘C’ grade bands play one test only during the Friday afternoon the music being ‘Song Without Words,’ by Eric Ball. The hymn test is own choice. Music for the quickstep is also own choice with the exception of the championship grade, for which a test march is to be playProgrammes are now in the hands of the printer.” This reply has been given by Mr T. Kirk-Burnnand from • synopsis of the contest programme.]
