ZULU IN FORM LIKELY WINNER AT ADDINGTON

Zulu, the winner of four races and £1955 as a five-year-old last season for D. R. V. Manson, who trains him at Charteris Bay, has shown splendid form this season to earn £1595 for two wins and a third. Zulu’s wins were in the Members’ Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on December 10 and in the Islington Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on December 31. • On the strength of this form Zulu will probably be sent out favourite for the President’s Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting this week. A grand stayer, Zulu, which appeals as a Cup horse in the making, is by Free Holmes’s successful sire, Grattan Loyal, from Singe, by Matchlight from the Wildwood Jun. mare, Zara, which is also the dam'of Ronda Chimes, Ariki (3min 36sec), Zara Bingen, Zariri, Zincali (3min 10 3-ssec), and Zingarrie (4min 19 4-ssec).

Most opposition to Zulu in the President’s Handicap may come from Ada Scott, Gay Piper, Jack Peterson, and British Machine. Ada Scott, which showed her best form this season when she beat British Machine by half a length after leading all the way in the Selwyn Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on January 2. looked well, but she raced without luck at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s recent meeting. A consistent performer for Mr J. O’Connell, for whom she is trained at Winchester by T. H. Gunning, Ada Scott must be conceded a good chance in the President’s Handicap. Gay Piper, from G. MeKendry’s Methven stable, has been placed in five races this season, his record including a win over British Machine in 4min 17sec in the Victoria Handicap at the Jubilee Clip meeting at Addington in November. An improving horse and a first-class reinsman, the Gay Piper-McKendry combination should carry solid support. Jack Peterson brought his record to two wins and three minor placings in his nine starts this season when he finished close up to Dragoman and Direct Heir in the Au Revoir Handicap at Forbury Park on January 28. Jack Peterson, which is being trained by E. Rinaldi while F. G. Holmes is at the Inter-Dominion Cham-

pionships in Melbourne, will be driven by Graham Holmes. British Machine’s record of three wins, three seconds, two thirds, and three fourths in his 16 starts this season is impressive. A classic winner earlier in his career, British Machine has done particularly well since being trained at Templeton by C. R. Berkett. On form British Machine should be handy to Zulu, Gay Piper, and Jack Peterson at the finish of the President’s Handicap. A Likely Type Mr A. Harrison’s Vivid Night should soon leave the maiden classes. A three-year-old gelding. Vivid Night is by Pay Sign from Gaiella, by Gaillard from Eleawah. Canterbury Park Trotting Club Withdrawals for all events at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on February 11 must be received by 5 p.m. to-night. Advt. New Brighton Trotting Club Nominations for all events at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on February 18 must be received by 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Advt. Related to a Winner S. A. Edwards’s team at Addington includes the two-year-old filly. Wren, which is by Dillon Hall from Sailor's Fancy, the dam of a winner in Sailor’s Globe. Bred at Peel Forest in 1935 by Mr W. Connolly, Sailor’s Fancy Js by Man o’ War from Reta Parrish, by Guy Parrish from a mare by Petereta, which was out of a Rothschild mare. Cheviot-Rangiora T.C. Nominations for the Rangiora Trotting Club and Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting to be held at Rangiora on Saturday, February 25, 1950, close at 5 p.m. on Monday, February 13, 1950, with the Secretary, D. S, Byrne, 193 Cashel street, Christchurch, / Advt.
