JAMELL’S EASY WIN

HORNBY HIGH-WEIGHT AT RICCARTON Jamell, the strong favourite, outclassed the opposition in the. Hornby High-weight Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, It | was his fourth successive win. The Nightly four-year-old started from the outside and a little behind the field, . but improved his position gradually to take charge early in the run home. He ; won by three lengths from Elofa, which • finished better than Wandering Minstrel 1 and Salmon King. I Philmarch was also slow away, and , Wandering Minstrel took over the run- : ning in the first furlong from Coxa wain, Prefect, Zorro, and Bren Gun, Jamell having only two horses behind him. Jamell started to improve his position near the half-mile, and at the straight entrance he appeared on the outside of Wandering Minstrel and Indian Morn. Jamell was clear and galloping effort- . lessly at the furlong from Wandering ■ Minstrel, Zorro, Elofa, and Salmon King. Jamell won effortlessly from Elofa, and Wandering Minstrel beat Salmon King by a nose for third. Zorro was two lengths back fifth, and was followed home by Bren Gun and Philmarch together, ■ and then Prefect and Volomai. Smart Galloper After making most of the running the ; favourite, Great Way, easily won the Trial j Stakes. Iron Trail lost ground at the ; start, and Saxonia and Bright Robin were also slow. After a furlong Great Way : and Wyldeye were pacemaking just ahead of Lady Philway, County Tyrone, Royal Saga, Puck, and Golden Victory. There was ! no change in the leading division at the straight entrance, but Twitter and Royal 1 Saga were becoming more prominent. I Great Way was clear at the furlong and ; won effortlessly by four lengths from j County Tyrone, which finished a shade better than Puck. Boniface finished well ■ for fourth, just shading her bracketed mate Moonsail, and Royal Saga, Twitter, 1 and Saxonia were right up in line ahead . of Lady Philway and Wyldeye. Placing? Altered With positions changing rapidly In the straight, several horses appeared to have winning chances in the Lyttelton Handicap. Robin Dayes was brought along with a late run to win going away by a length and a half from Maunga Reka. The favourite, Balcedar, after appearing to be beaten at the furlong, came again to be half a length back third. After ah 'inquiry, Maunga Reka was relegated to fourth place, Balcedar being placed second and Beau Esprit third. Cue was slow away and Airspeed took charge in the first furlong, just ahead of Balcedar, Dissenter, Symbolic, and Stagdance. There was no change in the running to the straight, and at the furlong there was little between Dissenter, Stagdance, Balcedar, and Reformed, which were all attempting to get to the front. Further on Maunga Reka, Beau Esprit, and Robin Dayes joined in, and Robin Dayes finished best to win decisively. Maunga Reka beat Balcedar by half a length for second, and Beau Esprit was close up fourth ahead of Stagdance. Reformed was two lengths back sixth, followed by Dissenter, Symbolic, Cue, and Acme. Racing Consistently Kosher confirmed his good form at Trentham by winning the Halswell Handicap after a keen tussle with Raineri. Both horses are trained at Wingatui and Kosher gave Mr G. J. Barton, who also races Brutus, his second win of the day. Speed Cop was last away and Kosher was also slow. Pacific Edition ran to the front from the start from Show Boy and Oronoko, and they were followed down the back by Indiana, Raineri, and Love Letter, with Kosher next. At the half mile Pacific Edition was a length clear of Oronoko, with a length to Snow Boy, then Indiana on the outside of Raineri. Kosher improved his position to show up wide out in about fourth place on the home turn. Raineri ran through to the front near the furlong, but Kosher, running on doggedly, got her measure 100 yards from the post and won decisively by half a length. Show Boy was three lengths away third, a length clear of Pacific Edition. Oronoko was half a length back fifth, followed by Love Letter and Indiana. Speed Cop and Lodestar were beaten off. Easy for Revelry Revelry, a strong favourite, drew out ever the last furlong to win the Post Handicap decisively by three lengths from the second favourite, Spice, which comfortably beat the others. It was Revelry’s second win of the season, but she has been improving with racing and in her present form she may continue her winning run.

Song Girl and Double Deck were slow away, Aegina beipg the early leader only to bh displaced at the six furlongs by Haughty Lyric. They were followed at hat stage by Dinnyhazer, Supreme Comma, Braemorn, Song Girl, Spice, and eveiry. Haughty Lyric was the leader ae straight from Aegina and Braemoj;n, •.th Revelry and Spice improving toeir positions. Revelry ran past Haughty Lyric t the furlong and went on to win com•jrtably from Spice, which was galloping crongiy over the final furlong. Silver hast finished well for third two lengths urther back, just cutting Haughty Lyric ut of third place. Valiant Prince was a jngth and a half further back fifth, jilowed by Aegina, Skyzami, Lady Guiitine, and Braemorn.
