SUMMER MEETING AT RICCARTON
RACING
Midsummer Handicap Won By Trench Fray
FAITHFUL PAL’S WIN IN CRAVEN PLATE
Doubles betting was successfully reintroduced at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Riccarton on Saturday. Supporters of Trench Fray and Faithful Pal, the winners of the Midsummer Handicap and Craven Plate respectively, were, in particular, satisfied with this form of betting, which returned a dividend of £203 1s for £L
Trench Fray, a well-performed light-weight, carried 772 10s tickets in the Midsummer Handicap, which he won gamely and narrowly from the favourite, Fine Night. All but one of those tickets were redeemed on the second leg, the Craven Plate, In which Faithful Pal, winner of two races at North Island holiday meetings, carried 52. There was a photo-call for first and gecond placings in the Craven Plate and there was an air of excitement while the result was awaited. Faithful Pal had finished well to challenge Resolute and they crossed the line with little between them. Those who had supported Resolute for the second leg stood to win more, for he carried only 42 tickets.
Trench Fray, in his two races at the Wellington summer meeting, lost his chance by beginning slowly. On Saturday he was back in the field in the early and middle stages, but his apE rentice rider, B. S. Finlayson, took im forward after passing the half mile and at the straight entrance he was in about fifth position in front of Fine Night. Trench Fray reached the front just inside the furlong and battled on gamely when challenged by Fine Night A three-year-old bay colt by Trench Fight from Fox Moth, Trench Fray is trained at Riccarton by C. C. McCarthy for Mr C. Neville. Faithful Pal has never approached the deeds of his younger half-sister, Excellency, but he has been a good winner for Dr. A. W. Owen-Johnston and Mr A. H. Ryder for whom he is trained at Riccarton by C. G. Humphries. In the Craven Plate on Saturday, the Man’s Pal gelding was confidently handled by K. Nuttall, who brought him along with a well-timed run to beat Resolute by a head. The Dunedin owner Mr G. J. Barton and his private trainer, J. W. Pankhurst, had a good day. They were represented by Brutus, Kosher and Western Front. Brutus decisively beat the favourite, Pastel, in the Middle Park Plate, and Kosher finished solidly to win in the Halswell Handicap Western Front was unplaced in the Midsummer Handicap. Jamell had his fourth successive win in the Hornby High-weight Handicap. Though burdened with 11.13, the Nightly four-year-old disposed of the opposition tffortlessly. He was confidently handled by the Invercargill iockey, K. E Wilson, who is spending his honeymoon in Christchurch. A charge that Maunga Reka. which finished second in the Lyttelton Handicap, interfered with Beau Esprit, which, in turn, interfered .with Dissenter half a furlong from the winning post, was heard by *■ the judicial stewards. The stewards decided that the charge of interference, although unintentional, was proved. The placings were altered, Balcedar being placed second. Beau Esprit third, and Maunga Reka fourth. The meeting was held in fine, warm weather, before a good attendance. The tracts provided fast going. The totalisator handled £80,372, including £6352 10s in doubles betting, compared with £63,882 last year. Midsummer Handicap Trench Fray finished strongly from fifth at the straight entrance to win the Midsummer Handicap from the favourite, Fine Night, which was closing the gap to the leader over the last 50 yards. Flying Control, the leader at the furlong, was a length back third. Signal Officer and Robinfaye were slow away. Western Front ran to the front inside the first furlong and led past the nile from Flying Control, Trinidad, Ned Kelly, Responsive, Lovemorn, Fine Night, Trench Fray, Pandemonium, All Alone, Sulogize, X alley Gold, and Robinfaye, with :wo lengths to Signal Officer. Western Front was under a good hold at the five furlongs, and at the half-mile ae was half a length in front of Flying Control, with Responsive, Trinidad, and Ned Kelly handy. Signal Officer had started his run from the tail of the field, and Valley Gold made his move near the three furlongs. On the home turn. Western Front and Tlying Control were on terms ahead of rrinidad. Responsive. Trench Fray, and j'ine Night, with Signal Officer and Valey Gold showing up wide out. Western Front was beaten at the furtong, where Trench Fray drew up to Flyng Control. Trench Fray took charge and stalled off Fine Night’s challenge by a neck. Flying Control was a length and a half clear of the fast-finishing Valley Sold, which beat Signal Officer by a head 'or fourth. Responsive was two lengths jack sixth, almost on terms with All Alone, and they were followed by Lovemorn, Ned Kelly, and Pandemonium. Western ’’ront faded in the straight and was welfth to finish. Craven Plate Confidently ridden by K. Nuttall, FaithU 1 Pal beat Resolute narrowly but well n the Craven Plate. Open Sky lost ground in the first 50 vards, and Theocritus and Whitley ran to ‘.he front early and led past the half-mile i length and a half clear of Flying Orders, vith two lengtns to Resolute, and two engths to Bonny Royal, which showed ipeed after a slow beginning. There was no change at the straight mtrance, but Resolute ran to the front ’t the furlong only to be challenged by flying Orders on the inner and Faithful 3 al on the outside. Flying Orders’ jffort was short-lived, but Faithful Pal continued his run to beat Resolute by a lead. The favourite, Flying Sovereign, which was well out of her ground at the lalf-mile, finished solidly for third, a .ength back, beating Flying Orders by half i length. Balkis, which was last at the lalf-mile, finished solidly into fifth place, g length back, and she was followed home y Whitley and Open Sky, which also showed finishing speed. Faithful Pal, a half-brother by Man’s Pal to that grand race mare Excellency, won two races in the North Island during the holidays and ran a fair race in the Telegraph Handicap on the first day of the Wellington summer meeting. Win for Brutus The favourite, Pastel, began brilliantly in the Middle Park Plate, and was one of the pacemakers to the straight. Over the last furlong, however, she could not stall off a dogged challenge from Brutus, which won going away by two lengths. Clair de Lune was the leader after a furlong, and was- still in front racing on to the course proper, just ahead of Pastel, with Brutus and High Spirits handiest of the others. Brutus had Pastel’s measure near the furlong and won well. Pastel just as easily beat Clair de Lune for second. Four lengths back. Royal Hoax just shaded Pictorial. Bobby Sox was sixth, and was followed home by Sovereign Chief, All Profit, and Bridgeway. ResultsHORNBY HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of £425. One mile and a quarter. 1. I—A.
