WEATHER IN JANUARY

OBSERVATORY SUMMARY The weather during January varied only slightly from normal January conditions, says a report from the Christchurch Geophysical Observatory. Both earth and air temperatures departed from normal by less than one degree. The maximum for the month of 88.5 degrees F. on January 10 was cf the usual order of January maxima, which range from 95.3 degrees F. in IPOB to 77.5 degrees F. in 1937. The most marked air temperature feature was the decrease of over 40 degrees from 88.5 degrees F. at 3.30 p.m. on January 10 to 45.7 degrees at 6 a.m. on’January 12. The total rainfall was a third of an inch above normal, being 2.52 inches (average 2.19). Sunshine was recorded for 239.2 hours. (24.5 hours above normal)'. Details are:—

Barometer.—Mean for month, 29.816 >nches; highest reading (on 19th), 30.316 inches; lowest reading (on 24th), 29.345 inches.

Temperature in Shade.—Mean for month, * 62.5 degrees F.; highest reading (on 10th). 88.5 degrees F.; lowest reading (on 12th), 45.7 degrees F. Temperature Exposed.—Mean minimum on gfrass. 46.6 degrees Flowest reading (on 12th), 33.9 degrees F. Moisturd.—Mean daily amount of cloud -(0-8). observed at 09.00 a.m., 5 8; total amount of rain, 2.52 inches; number of rainy days, 12; heaviest fall (on 29th), 0.68 inches.

Earth Temperatures.—Mean at a depth of one foot. 67.7 degrees F.mean at a depth of three feet. 65.8 degrees F.: mean at a depth of five feet, 61.9 degrees F. non unshine.—-Total amount of sunshine, 239.2 hours; mean daily amount, 7.7 hours.
