DERELICT HOUSE BURNT

FIRE NEAR RAKAIA A derelict house, 15 acres of stubble, jflve acres of bluegum plantation, and 10 chains of gorse fence were destroyed by fire on the Rakaia settlement, near Rakaia, on Saturday. Although the area of the fire was extensive, the damage done was not serious. ’ Before the fire was put out it advanced to within a chain of a house occupied by Mr J. R. Pawsev. The Rakaia Fire Brigade and the nre-fight-ing tender of the Ashburton County Council helped to fight Uie fire. The fire was under control atlO p.m. It is thought to have been started by embers from a stack burned the previous day.

TWO SMALL FIRES Two small fires were put out by the Christchurch Fire Brigade yesterday afternoon. The first, to which the brigade was called at 3.31 p.m., was a grass fire in Mount Pleasant road. Units from the central and Woolston stations put it out without difficulty. Eight minutes after the first call came another, to a rubbish fire on Mr R. J. Loughnan’s property at 52 Glandovev road. This was put out by engines from the central and St. Albans stations. Neither fire caused any damage. SHED DAMAGED A detached shed on Mr G. H. Dunkley’s property at 81 Clyde road which caught alight last evening made a great blaze, oil and inflammable roofing material being stored in it. The ‘ shed and its contents, -which included j garden and carpentry tools, were severely damaged. Adiacent poplar • trees were also burnt. Engines from J the central and St. Albans stations ’ attended the fire.
