NONCONFORMIST BAPTISMS

ATTITUDE OF ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH EFFECT ON GRANTING OF DIVORCES (N.Z. Press Association*—Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) VATICAN CITY, January 31. Baptism conferred by Nonconformist sects is valid in the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy Office, which is the central Roman Catholic authority on heresy and dogma, gave this ruling yesterday. The Holy Office, replying to questions put by United States bishops, said that the Roman Catholic Church recognised baptism according to the rites of the Methodists, Baptists, Congregationalists, Presbyterians, and the Disciples of Christ, if the intention of the officiating rriimster was in accordance with the teachings of Christ and of the Church.

The Holy Office’s ruling on baptism means that Roman Catholic judges are barred from granting divorces to Nonconformists of the sects named whose baptism is recognised as valid, and whose marriage according to their own rites is therefore accepted as a Christian marriage by the Roman Catholic Church.

The question arose from the recent statement by the Pope that Roman Catholic judges could not grant a divorce to persons whose marriage the Roman Catholic Church recognised as valid.
