NEW YORK STOCK MARKET

WIDESPREAD GAINS (Hee. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 30. Shares on the New York Stock Exchange .rose in value to-day to their highest general average since August 21, 1946. Gains of more than a dollar a share were spread over a broad list. They wiped out the last vestiges of the declines recorded on January 12 and 13.

Wall Street circles said the rise was a reflection of hopes that the present American coal strike would be settled without serious disruption of business, and was also a result of confidence in the business outlook for the first half of 1950.
